Quit using spit tobacco
North Carolina has one of the highest rates of spit tobacco usage. Many people believe that smoke-less tobacco is not as harmful to you as cigarettes. However, people who use smoke-less tobacco are exposed to higher levels of some cancer causing chemicals in tobacco.
Tips to quit:
Quitting Chew is different from quitting smoking
- Set a date to stop chew
- Use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to help you quit. Chew provides more nicotine than cigarettes do. Ask your doctor and pharmacist about using a combination of the medicines on the market to help you quit.
-
Use a replacement chew product or chew sugar-free gum or sunflower seeds. This helps with the oral aspects of quitting chew.
-
Consult your dentist for an oral exam.
- Call the NC Quitline 1-800-784-8669 ( 1-800-QUIT-NOW)
Spit tobacco data:
- 15.9% of boys in high school use spit tobacco according to the 2005 YTS Survey
- The 2006 BRFSS survey shows that 21% (22% of men; 16.6% of women) of adults use spit tobacco.
- In the 18-24 age group, the spit tobacco usage rate is 28.8%
- Because of the new spit/smokeless tobacco products and new marketing and advertising, we will have to work hard to keep the usage level at the current rates.

Did you know?
Spit tobacco users learn and adjust to new tasks at a slower rate than non-tobacco users. During a visual motor task, smokeless tobacco users exhibited slower learning and adjustment to new requirements, more jerks, slower and more irregular movements, and less accurate overall performance compared to non-spit users.
